Vintage Yachimun Plate — Manji

$85.00

A vintage Yachimun plate from Okinawa, Japan. Yachimun — meaning "fired things" in Okinawan — is a ceramic tradition with roots stretching back to the 16th century, shaped by centuries of cultural exchange between Okinawa, mainland Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. The craft gained wider recognition in the early 20th century when Yanagi Sōetsu, founder of the Mingei (folk craft) movement, championed its unpretentious beauty and honest craftsmanship.

At the center of the plate sits the manji, a Buddhist symbol representing harmony, compassion, eternity, and the interconnectedness of all things. Painted in bold, dark brushstrokes and framed by a warm, earthy ring against a cream glaze, the motif reflects the spiritual and decorative traditions woven into everyday Okinawan pottery.
