Kim Sajik Monogatari (The Tale)

Work made over the past decade by Kim Sajik, a Korean artist born and based in Japan, out of her sustained thinking about identity Ñ ethnicity, nationality, gender. Each photograph is meticulously staged, building a world that reaches toward the origins of existence, crosses time, moves between kinds of being, and draws up the ordinary acts and feelings buried there. The images fuse Asian mythology with citations from Western art history in a way that is entirely her own: forceful, and never fully solved.
