Keisho Okamoto, Daichiro Shinjo SUDIRU

Artist Daichiro Shinjo compiles previously unseen photographs of closed rituals on Miyako Island, made by his grandfather Keisho Okamoto (1937Ð2024). A Zen priest and pioneering folklorist of Okinawan culture, Okamoto photographed villages across Miyako and the surrounding islands from the late 1960s into the 1970s, as part of a folklore practice he pursued as jikatagaku Ñ the study of a region from within it. More than research material, the images hold people as they were, giving thanks and praying to the gods and to nature. The book also contains Shinjo's indigo and calligraphy works overlaid on the photographs.
