Ihiro Hayami, Sandra Phillips, Marc Feustel and others MORE THAN ONE WORLD: New Japanese Photography 50 Years On

Published to celebrate fifty years since New Japanese Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Co-curated in 1974 by John Szarkowski and Shoji Yamagishi, that exhibition was the first substantial presentation of Japanese photographers abroad, and it shaped how the field was studied and valued in the West for decades.

Fifteen texts by curators, critics and researchers, developed from exhibitions and symposia at T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO 2024, fall into four parts: the exhibition's historical significance, what it overlooked, a widening to global perspectives, and a look ahead. Szarkowski and Yamagishi's original prefaces open the volume, alongside installation views from T3. The focus falls on what has been least discussed Ñ gender, international perspective, photography after the internet.
