Komebukuro — Rice Sack
Couldn't load pickup availability
A komebukuro — a sack used to store and carry rice, an indispensable part of everyday life in Japan. The rough hemp fabric is dyed with kakishibu (fermented persimmon juice), a traditional treatment that strengthens the cloth and repels moisture and insects. Repeated repairs and patches over the years reflect the aesthetic of Mingei — the Japanese folk art philosophy that celebrates beauty born from everyday, utilitarian objects made by anonymous craftspeople — giving the piece a beautiful, lived-in character that has made these sacks highly collectible today. Very rare piece.
