GIFT COLLECTION 2024
IRON SHADES OF JAPAN
Curious Corners proudly presents our very first gift collection: IRON SHADES OF JAPAN.
This curated selection features exceptional crafts from Japan’s renowned traditions: Nambu Tekki, cast iron by Suzuki Morihisa; Aizu Urushi lacquerware by MEGURU; and Oshima Tsumugi hand-woven silk by Hajime Shoji.
Each craft artfully references “iron” in material, color, texture or technique:
NAMBU TEKKI is undoubtedly the champion of iron craft from the northern part of Japan. Suzuki Morihisa is one of the most celebrated names in this popular craft, passed down through generations of head artisans in the Suzuki family. The collection showcases everyday items of cast iron designed and made by the contemporary, 16th-generation practitioner, Suzuki Morihisa.
The Urushi Lacquerware selection focuses on SHIBUICHI and TETSUJI collections by MEGURU from the Aizu region in Fukushim prefecture. SHIBUICHI is named after silver-copper alloy. By mixing Urushi lacquer with tin powder and charcoal, this traditional finishing creates a stunning visual appeal mimicking the alloy. TETSUJI lacquerware features a robust coating made from Urushi mixed with diatomaceous earth, which recreates the color and texture of cast iron.
From Amami Oshima, one of the southernmost islands in Japan, Hajime Shoji presents hand-woven, hand-dyed silk textile collections. Among the several histories and techniques interwoven into this luxury textile, iron-rich mud from the island plays an important role. This made it possible to develop a unique mud-dye technique, creating textile in deep and shiny hue of iron brown. The collection presents a series of garments made from recycled kimonos dyed in mud, as well as garment mud-dyed with stunning Shibori patterns.
IRON SHADES OF JAPAN invites you to discover the artistry and unique story embedded within each creation.
