Two-Tone “Tsutsugaki” Furoshiki -Fan & Peony-

By KOFU

Tsutsugaki is a freehand resist-dyeing technique in which rice paste is applied through a cone-shaped tube to create patterns on fabric before dyeing. The result is bold, painterly, and unmistakably handmade—no two pieces are identical.

This furoshiki features fan and peony motifs rendered in the tsutsugaki method, with a distinctive two-tone palette that gives the cloth a striking visual presence. The peony (botan) symbolizes wealth and honor in Japanese culture; the fan suggests celebration and good fortune.

A substantial vintage textile suitable for display, use as a wall hanging, or as the statement wrapping cloth it was originally designed to be.
